Summary of second meeting of ENSOs and Regime Shifts group

Date of Meeting: 3 September 1997

Place: International Pacific Halibut Commission conference room

Present at the meeting:

Steven Hare (IPHC), Ray Hilborn (UW), Brian Bigler (Wards Cove), Ric Brodeur (NMFS), Warren Wooster (UW), John Field (UW), Bill Pinnix (UW), Curt Ebbesmeyer (Evans-Hamilton), Jim Ingraham (NMFS), Rich Hinrichson (UW), John Williams (NMFS), Nate Mantua (JISAO), Richard Strickland (UW).

Most people brought with them one to several overheads to show and discuss. The overheads (at least those that I’ve received the data for) are linked on the main page.

To summarize the discussion, there is not strong proof of a regime shift opposite in nature to that which occurred in 1977. 1995 was an anomalous year in many indicators but not a majority and 1996 was even less anomalous. It is certainly too early to state with any confidence that something significant happened in 1995.

Next meeting: 24 September 1997.

Where: IPHC conference room.
