How come I never receive any mail from the IPHC? Don’t you love me anymore?

Well, have you moved? We receive several emails from you folks saying that you did not receive this or that and then…in the same email, you say "Oh, yeah here is my new mailing address."

If we don’t have your current address we can’t mail you information! Please, please, please keep us informed with your current contact information!

You haven’t moved? Send Tracee an email with your address again. Perhaps it was entered into our database incorrectly.

What do I need to do BEFORE training

As a condition of hire in 2007, you will need to provide a Passport before training. If you do not have a current passport you will need to secure one ASAP. Be warned that in the US it takes 6-10 weeks to get a passport if you avoid paying the expediting fees. And according to Tracee, it takes even longer for Canadian to get their passports

Additionally, we require that all samplers have either a US or Canadian bank account for direct deposit. If you do not have a bank account you will need to arrange one BEFORE training. If you have a Canadian bank account, please be sure to ask if they have a US account available. Most major banks have an option for the US account.

Bring your banking information to training.

We expect you to read the manual before training.

When is the 2008 training? Where is training? Do I have to attend?

Sea sampler training, which of course is mandatory, will be held from May 19th - 24th in Seattle, WA.  You will be responsible for your transportation to training. We will cover your hotel room and provide you with a daily stipend while you are here.

Does the IPHC have my current contact information?

Maybe.... Due to budget cutbacks we've had to put our team of bloodhounds to sleep and fire our private investigator and our psychic. So, you should probably send Tracee an e-mail with your info. tracee@iphc.wahington.edu

How do I propose additions to this list?

It's as easy as e-mailing your suggestion to eric@iphc.washignton.edu.

How do I get paid? Do you have a direct deposit option?

We are requiring all samplers to have either a US or Canadian bank account for direct deposit. If you do not have a bank account you will need to arrange one BEFORE training. Please provide Melissa with a voided check so she can ensure your deposit will reach the correct account. You may mail the check to the office before training or bring one to training. If you have any questions, contact Melissa.

If you have a Canadian bank account, please be sure to ask if they have US account available. Most major banks have an option for the US account. Your best bet is to open a US bank account to reduce fees.

Do we get paid for training? When do we get paid?

Sea Samplers will receive $50.00 a day per diem, untaxed and an additional $50.00 a day stipend, which will be taxed at the Sampler's designated tax rate. Your training paycheck will not be available until the second or third day of training.

Can I reimburse my travel expenses to training?

No, travel to training is not compensated.

What happens if I am not deployed directly after training?

For those employees not immediately deployed (and not based locally) and for whom we are not providing accommodations, we will provide a reimbursement equivalent to the return mileage ($0.485/mile x total miles as per Mapquest mileage calculator) between Seattle, their home, and Seattle again. It will be up to the individual to plan their way home. This compensation assumes that the sampler is available for work. If a sampler is not deployed immediately because he or she specifically requested a tailored schedule, this compensation may not apply. There is a 1000-mile maximum on claimed miles. ALL expense claims for mileage must include a copy of the Mapquest mileage calculator (Mapquest.com) or similar. All deployment dates are strictly up to the survey team.

How long will I be deployed?

The IPHC guarantees a minimum of three weeks work to all samplers. We are doing our best within the logistical constraints to provide everyone with as much work as possible.

What about health insurance?

Accident policies provided by the vessel and the IPHC may not cover all accidents or medical problems that could happen in the field. The Commission requires our seasonal employees to secure and maintain their own medical/accident insurance policies. All policies will be reimbursed by the IPHC when claimed. If you do not have insurance, a basic policy is available from the IPHC. Fortis, or another insurance carrier designated by IPHC, provides basic health coverage including hospitalization and emergency care. Please have either proof of insurance (policy and proof of payment) for reimbursement or you can fill out a short-term policy during training. If you have any questions regarding insurance, contact Melissa.
