(
Dutch Harbor and Seward, and 3 months for St. Paul and Sand Point)

The International Pacific Halibut Commission is seeking to hire Port Samplers for the 2010 halibut season. The employment term is from March 1 through November 15, 2010 (dependent on season dates set at the January 2010 IPHC Annual Meeting). Re-employment is possible for subsequent halibut seasons, typically from March to mid November for Dutch Harbor and Seward, and 3 months for St. Paul and Sand Point. These are the ports currently being filled; however, this announcement will serve to staff other Alaska port sampler positions that may come available in 2010.

Salary starts at US Federal GS-6 salary ($2,510 per month plus 2010 COLA increase). Samplers also receive a 25% Alaska bonus (cost of living adjustment) that is non-taxed. The Commission offers a range of benefits including medical insurance, vacation and sick leave, and reimbursement for the cost of gear, communication, and mileage expenditures. The applicant is responsible for his or her accommodations however, some assistance is provided at the start of the season to aid in procurement. Commission personnel will provide necessary training.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The incumbent obtains detailed and accurate fishing information from captain's logbooks and fish ticket information of halibut purchases from dealer records. The incumbent also obtains biological data by sampling halibut landings for length and age material and redeeming halibut tags. The incumbent serves as the Commission's representative and performs other assignments as directed.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Fisheries or biological degree from a recognized University or Technical Institute or related fisheries sampling work experience.

Abilities: Be able to work independently. Be able to interface well with others. Must follow sampling protocols to ensure unbiased results. Be able to transcribe data accurately and edit collected data following rules and using judgment. The workload varies greatly and the sampler must be able to work long hours on some days. Also, the ability to lift fish as large as 40 pounds is required.

The Commission is an International Governmental Organization and as such we will be considering applicants regardless of nationality. However, due to conflict of interest, the Commission will not hire anyone with direct or indirect ties to the halibut industry. Due to the nature of the work and the agency, a background check is also a condition of employment. Interested applicants should email, mail or fax a resume with references to: Lara Erikson, AK Port Sampler Supervisor, PO Box 95009, Seattle, WA 98145-2009, FAX 206-632-2983. The application deadline is December 13, 2009. Candidates will be selected for interviews based on meeting basic qualifications and additional demonstrated experience.
