1995 Halibut Landing Report No. 6

North Washington Coast Sport Fishery Re-opens for One Day

The north Washington coast (waters west of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line and south to the Queets River) sport halibut harvest that closed May 27 fell 11,020 pounds short of the 71,410 pound catch limit. Private boat effort during the last week of fishing was less than expected, possibly because of the May 25 opening date for halibut fishing in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound (waters east of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line). The average weight of halibut landed was also lower than anticipated. Therefore, this area will re-open for one day, Saturday July 1. The daily bag limit will be one halibut per person, with no size limit. If enough catch limit remains after July 1, an additional opening may be announced by the Commission.
