1997 Halibut Landing Report No. 5
Area 2B Commercial Fishery Update
Halibut landings from Area 2B total 5.2 million pounds through June
11, 1997 leaving 7.3 million pounds of the catch limit to be caught. The fishery will
continue until all IVQs have been filled, or November 15, whichever is earlier. For
comparison, from March 15 to June 17, 1996, 4.45 million pounds were landed from the IVQ
fishery which represented 47% of the 1996 catch limit.
Annette Island Reserve Fishery in Area 2C
The Metlakatla Indian community has been authorized by the United
States Government to conduct a commercial halibut fishery within the Annette Island
Reserve. Four 48-hour fishing periods occurred between May 2 and June 9, producing a total
catch of 20,511 pounds.
Alaskan Commercial Fishery Update
It is estimated that the following catches and number of landings
were made in the Alaskan IFQ and Community Development Quota (CDQ) fisheries through June
11, 1997.

For comparison, from March 15 to June 12, 1996, 14.6
million pounds were landed in the Alaskan IFQ and CDQ fisheries which represented 38% of
the total 1996 catch limit.
Incidental Commercial Halibut Catch in the Area 2A Salmon Troll Fishery
The total allowable incidental commercial catch of halibut allocated to
the salmon troll fishery was 21,635 pounds. As of June 8, it was estimated that 11,370
pounds were landed.
