The Alaskan catch represents 88% of the catch limit. For comparison, from March 15 to October 16, 1996, 34.5 million pounds or 89% of the 1996 catch limit were landed in the Alaskan IFQ and CDQ fisheries. For approximately the same period last year 8.8 million pounds or 92% of the catch limit were landed from Area 2B (British Columbia) compared to 84% in 1997.

1997 Summer Setline Surveys Completed

In early September, the Commission completed the first year of a 5-year comprehensive setline research survey of the halibut resource. Employing 15 chartered longline vessels, surveying was conducted in all areas, from the central Oregon coast, north through British Columbia and Southeast Alaska, across the Gulf of Alaska, throughout the Aleutian Islands, and in the Bering Sea. Over 1,100 stations were fished with 5-skate sets during the June-September effort, which required 1,117 staff days at sea. Results should be available in early December.
