1998 Halibut Landing Report No. 1

Quota Share Commercial Fishery Update

It is estimated that the following catches and number of landings were made in the British Columbia IVQ, and in the Alaskan IFQ fishery through April 15, 1998. No Community Development Quota (CDQ) landings have been made.

For comparison, from March 15 to April 18, 1997, 5.37 million pounds were landed in the Alaskan IFQ fishery which represented 10% of the total 1997 Alaskan catch limit. For the same period last year March 15 to April 15, 1.4 million pounds were landed in the Area 2B (British Columbia) IVQ fishery which represented 12% of the 1997 catch limit.

Northwest Treaty Tribes Fishery in Area 2A

Northwest treaty Indian tribes were allocated a total allowable catch of 287,000 pounds in subarea 2A-1 (northern Washington coast) in 1998. Of this total, 15,000 pounds are reserved for ceremonial and subsistence purposes, leaving 272,000 pounds for the treaty Indian commercial fishery. The commercial catch of 291,249 pounds exceeded the catch limit by 19,249 pounds and was taken during an opening from March 15 to March 20. Therefore, the treaty Indian commercial fishery is closed for the remainder of 1998.

Annette Island Reserve Fishery in Area 2C

The Metlakatla Indian community has been authorized by the United States Government to conduct a commercial halibut fishery within the Annette Island Reserve. The first 48-hour fishing period is scheduled to occur between April 17 to April 19.
