The Alaskan catch represents 32% of the catch limit. For comparison, from March 15 to June 11, 1997, 20.1 million pounds or 38% of the 1997 catch limit were landed in the Alaskan IFQ and CDQ fisheries. From March 15 to June 11, 1997, 5.2 million pounds or 42% of the catch limit were landed from Area 2B (British Columbia) compared to 40% in 1998.

Incidental Commercial Halibut Catch in the Area 2A Salmon Troll Fishery

The total allowable incidental commercial catch of halibut allocated to the salmon troll fishery was 25,344 pounds. As of June 7, it was estimated that 4,400 pounds were landed.

Washington Sport Fishery Update

The Washington North Coast sport halibut fishery (Bonilla-Tatoosh line to Queets River) has taken an estimated 65,542 pounds as of June 14, 1998, leaving 15,510 pounds of quota for harvest through June 30. Fishery managers do not expect the full quota to be taken by June 30. An additional 15,000 pounds will become available on July 1. The North Coast fishery will, therefore, continue until a combined harvest of 96,052 pounds occurs. The fishery is expected to last at least through July 4.

The Washington South Coast sport halibut fishery (Queets River to Leadbetter Point) has taken an estimated 31,327 pounds as of June 14, 1998 leaving 5,321 pounds of unharvested. Fishery managers expect the fishery will last into early July. When harvest reaches 35,648 pounds, general fishing in the area will close. One thousand pounds will remain for a restricted fishery in inside waters. An announcement for the south coast fishery is expected during the week of June 22.
