Incidental Commercial Halibut Fishery in Area 2A Closed
The incidental commercial halibut fishery conducted during the salmon
troll season in Area 2A closed on October 31, 1998. The estimate of the 1998 halibut catch
for the incidental commercial fishery is 13,400 pounds.
Alaska and British Columbia Commercial Halibut Fisheries Closed
The Alaska and British Columbia Individual Quota fisheries closed
on November 15, 1998. Therefore, all areas are closed to commercial halibut fishing for
the remainder of 1998. The preliminary commercial catch estimate for Alaska is 53.9
million pounds, 4.1 million pounds or 7% under the catch limit. The commercial catch of
12.8 million pounds for British Columbia is 2% (200,000 pounds) under the catch limit.
