1999 Halibut Landing Report No. 1

Quota Share Commercial Fishery Update

It is estimated that the following catches and number of landings were made in the British Columbia IVQ, and in the Alaskan IFQ fishery through April 13, 1999. No Community Development Quota (CDQ) landings have been made.

The Alaskan catch represents 11% of the catch limit. For comparison, from March 15 to April 15, 1998, 4.7 million pounds or 8% of the 1998 catch limit were landed in the Alaskan IFQ. From March 15 to April 15, 1998, 2.3 million pounds or 18% of the catch limit were landed from Area 2B (British Columbia) compared to 17% in 1999.

Northwest Treaty Tribes Fishery in Area 2A

In 1999 the Northwest treaty Indian tribes were allocated a total allowable catch of 266,000 pounds in subarea 2A-1 (northern Washington coast); 10,000 pounds are reserved for ceremonial and subsistence purposes, leaving 256,000 pounds for the treaty Indian commercial fishery. The unrestricted fishery catch of 215,000 pounds was taken in three openings and is close to the catch limit (217,600 pounds). The restricted fishery is limited to 500 pounds per trip and the catch of 22,600 pounds is 15,800 pounds under the catch limit (38,400 pounds).

Annette Island Reserve Fishery in Area 2C

The Metlakatla Indian community has been authorized by the United States Government to conduct a commercial halibut fishery within the Annette Island Reserve. This fishery will open mid-May.
