Non-treaty Commercial Fishing Period Limits in Area 2A

The Commission has determined that fishing period limits will be required during the 10-hour, July 7 non-treaty directed commercial fishing period in Area 2A to avoid exceeding the 133,108 pound catch limit. The July 7 fishing period will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. The fishery is restricted to waters that are south of Point Chehalis, Washington (46° 53’18"N. latitude) under regulations promulgated by National Marine Fisheries Service. Fishing period limits as indicated in the following table will be in effect for this opening.

*Weights are after 2% has been deducted for ice and slime if fish are not washed prior to weighing.

The appropriate vessel length class and letter is printed on each vessel license.

The fishing period limit is shown in terms of dressed, head-off weight as well as dressed, head-on weight, although fishermen are reminded that regulations require that all halibut from Area 2A be landed with the head on.

The fishing period limit applies to the vessel, not the individual fisherman, and any landings over the vessel limit will be subject to forfeiture and fine.

Oregon Sport Fishery From Cape Falcon to Florence North Jetty

The preliminary harvest estimate for the May six-day all-depth fishery in the Cape Falcon to Florence North Jetty area in Oregon is 105,883 pounds, which exceeds the 93,740 pound quota by approximately 13%. Therefore, the all-depth fishery scheduled for June is cancelled. The overage of 12,143 pounds will be deducted from the August fishery for the Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain area. Open days for the August fishery, if any, will be announced on July 12 on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife hotline (1-800-662-9825). The nearshore fishery (waters inside the 30-fathom curve) is presently open seven days a week and will close when the 9,650 pound quota has been taken or on September 30, whichever occurs first.

Oregon Sport Fishery From Florence North Jetty to Humbug Mountain

The preliminary harvest estimate for the May six-day all-depth fishery in the Florence North Jetty to Humbug Mountain area in Oregon is 11,277 pounds, which exceeds the 8,732 pound quota by approximately 29%. Therefore, the all-depth fishery scheduled for June is cancelled. The overage of 2,545 pounds will be deducted from the August fishery for the Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain area. Open days for the August fishery, if any, will be announced on July 12 on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife hotline (1-800-662-9825). The nearshore fishery (waters inside the 30-fathom curve) is presently open seven days a week and will close when the 2,183 pound quota has been taken or on September 30, whichever occurs first.

Quota Share Commercial Fishery Update

It is estimated that the following catches and number of landings were made in the British Columbia IVQ, and in the Alaskan IFQ fishery through June 1, 1999.

The Alaskan catch represents 35% of the catch limit. For comparison, from March 15 to June 2, 1998, 15.2 million pounds or 26% of the 1998 catch limit were landed in the Alaskan IFQ fishery. From March 15 to May 31, 1998, 4.6 million pounds or 35% of the catch limit were landed from Area 2B (British Columbia) compared to 45% in 1999.
