Quota Share Commercial Fishery Update

It is estimated that the following catches and number of landings were made in the Alaskan IFQ/CDQ fishery through October 17, 1999 and in the British Columbia (Area 2B) IVQ fishery through October 16, 1999.

The Alaskan catch represents 90% of the catch limit. For comparison, from March 15 to October 13, 1998, 48.7 million pounds or 84% of the 1998 catch limit were landed in the Alaskan IFQ/CDQ fishery. From March 15 to October 13, 1998, 11.4 million pounds or 88% of the catch limit were landed from Area 2B compared to 95% in 1999.

Update on the Annette Island Reserve Fishery in Area 2C

The Metlakatla Indian community has been authorized by the United States Government to conduct a commercial halibut fishery within the Annette Island Reserve. Eleven 48-hour fishing periods occurred between May 22 and October 3, producing a total catch of 34,476 pounds. The Metlakatla Indian Community and the Bureau of Indian Affairs will announce future halibut openings.
