The Alaskan catch represents 90% of the catch limit. For comparison, from March 15 to October 17, 1999, 54.9 million pounds, or 90% of the 1999 catch limit, were landed in the Alaskan IFQ/CDQ fishery. From March 15 to October 17, 1999, 11.5 million pounds, or 95% of the catch limit, were landed from Area 2B (British Columbia) compared to 92% in 2000.

Annette Island Reserve Fishery in Area 2C

The Metlakatla Indian community has been authorized by the United States Government to conduct a commercial halibut fishery within the Annette Island Reserve. Fourteen 48-hour fishing periods occurred between April 29 and October 1, with a total catch of 54,026 pounds. The Metlakatla Indian Community and the Bureau of Indian Affairs will announce future halibut openings.

Area 2A Sport Halibut Fishing Closes

An opening on September 22, 2000 for the Oregon all-depth sport halibut fishery from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain resulted in a 7,203-pound harvest, well short of the 19,044 pounds available. Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel reported weather was a major factor in preventing many vessels from participating in the opening and those that did reported a fast drift which made halibut fishing ineffective.

By regulation, the remaining open areas covering the Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain 30-fathom or less fishery and the fishery south of Humbug Mountain closed on September 30, 2000. Therefore, all sport fishing for Pacific halibut is closed in Area 2A for the remainder of the year.
