QUESTIONS ABOUT SPORT CHARTER IFQS FOR AREAS
2C AND 3A SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE NORTH PACIFIC FISHERY
MANAGEMENT COUNCIL
The North Pacific Fishery Management Council
(NPFMC) has recently adopted a plan for an Individual Fishing
Quota (IFQ) program for the sport charter fishery for halibut in
Areas 2C (Southeast Alaska) and 3A (Southcentral Alaska).
Certain elements of the program refer to participation during
1995-1997, a period when the International Pacific Halibut
Commission (IPHC) required that all sport charter vessels carry
an IPHC license. A decision is expected in the next few months
whether the IPHC license will be used as proof of participation.
If the IPHC license is used, IPHC will provide the necessary
information to the allocating agency. Therefore, it is not
necessary for individual sport charter vessel operators to
request their licensing history from IPHC. Charter operators
should phone the NPFMC (907-271-2809) or visit their internet
web site (www.fakr.noaa.gov/npfmc)
for further details of the program.
