The Alaskan catch represents 10% of the catch
limit. For comparison, from March 15 to April 12, 2001, 5.4
million pounds or 9% of the 2001 catch limit were landed in the
Alaskan IFQ fishery. From March 15 to April 12, 2001, 2.0
million pounds, or 19% of the catch limit, were landed from Area
2B (British Columbia) compared to 19% in 2002.
Northwest Treaty Tribes Fishery in Area 2A
In 2002, the Northwest treaty Indian tribes
were allocated a total allowable catch of 483,500 pounds in
subarea 2A-1 (northern Washington coast): 16,000 pounds were
reserved for ceremonial and subsistence purposes, leaving
467,500 pounds for the treaty Indian commercial fishery.
Preliminary estimates indicate that 190,093 pounds were landed
during two unrestricted openings (3/18-3/20, 4/2-4/3). A
restricted fishery with landing restrictions of 500 pounds per
vessel per 24-hour period, which started on March 18, will
continue until April 19. It is estimated that approximately
49,602 pounds have been landed in the restricted fishery as of
April 15, for a total tribal commercial harvest of 239,605
pounds.
