2002 Halibut Landing Report No. 8

Area 2A Directed Commercial Halibut Fishery Closed for Remainder of 2002

The International Pacific Halibut Commission estimates that 48,000 pounds were landed from the July 24th directed fishery, thereby reaching the catch limit for this fishery. The Area 2A non-treaty directed commercial halibut fishery is closed for the remainder of 2002.

Area 2A Incidental Commercial Halibut Fishery during the Salmon Troll Season

The total allowable incidental commercial catch of halibut allocated to the Area 2A salmon troll fishery is 39,300 pounds. The estimate of halibut landed in Oregon through July 15 is 11,500 pounds and in Washington through July 22 is 20,000 pounds. Therefore, 7,800 pounds remain in the catch limit. The incidental halibut catch fishery during the salmon troll season remains open until further notice. For further incidental fishery retention information call the NMFS hotline (1-800-662-9825).

Incidental Commercial Halibut Catch in the Area 2A Fixed Gear Sablefish Fishery

The total allowable incidental commercial catch of halibut allocated to the limited entry, fixed gear sablefish fishery which operates in Area 2A north of Point Chehalis, Washington is 88,389 pounds. It is estimated that 23,187 pounds have been landed through July 22. This incidental halibut catch fishery remains open until further notice.
