IPHC Scholarship winner announced

The Commission is pleased to announce the winner of the first IPHC Scholarship. The 2002 recipient is Ms. Elise Pletnikoff of Kodiak, Alaska. She is a remarkable young woman, with excellent academic qualifications and a strong record of service to her community. She is enrolled in a pre-med program at Carroll College in Montana and hopes to become a surgeon. She intends to practice eventually in Kodiak and also contribute to the Alaska Native Health Center. The Commission anticipates presenting a certificate to Ms. Pletnikoff at its Annual Meeting in Victoria BC, Canada, in January 2003. The IPHC Scholarship is for $2,000 (US) and is renewable over a four-year period. One new scholarship will be granted each year, on a four-year cycle.

The Scholarship Committee had a difficult decision choosing from the 23 applicants and there were a number of very worthy candidates. The Committee considered several types of post-secondary education, including technical schools and other alternates. The final short list had individuals with interest in medicine, maritime shipping, business marketing, and marine technology. Applications for the 2003 scholarship will be accepted from April 1 through July 15, 2003.
