INTERNATIONAL PACIFIC HALIBUT COMMISSION
The specimen in the
middle of the photograph is a Pacific halibut that was caught in the Shumagin Islands on
the IPHC survey of Area 3B in July, 1996. It is 7'10" (237 cm). The specimen on the
right is Bill Sauer, skipper of the F/V Kristiana, the
vessel that carried out the survey. He is 6'7" (201 cm). The specimen on the left is
me. I am 5'8" (173 cm). The photo was taken in Sand Point, Alaska by Tracee Geernaert. Back at the office in Seattle, Joan Forsberg read the rings on the otolith and found
that it (actually she) was 26 years old.
My primary work for the International Pacific Halibut Commission is conducting the annual stock assessment. Assessment data, recent assessments, and related papers are posted here.
